Ingredient Notes:

All of the ingredients needed to make an onion dip mix at home.

Some homemade onion dip recipes call for a premade dry onion soup mix packet, but that’s not necessary! You actually only need 6 simple pantry staples:

  • Dried Chopped Onions: This is the pivotal ingredient in this dip. It gives it that iconic onion dip vibe. These are sometimes called onion flakes. Look for ones that have one ingredient: dried onion.
  • Onion Powder: But we’re not stopping at just one type of onion. We need ALL the onion flavor!
  • Garlic Powder: I like to include some garlic powder as well, but not nearly as much. Garlic powder can get zingy quickly. IYKYK.
  • Dried Parsley: I love the flecks of green the parsley adds. It’s not a strictly necessary ingredient, but don’t skip it if you have it on hand!
  • Salt: Of course no good dip recipe is without salt! I use unrefined sea salt, so if you use table salt you may want to reduce the amount slightly. I’m sure you could crack in some black pepper as well, but I haven’t tested that with this particular recipe.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Pouring the ingredients into a small jar.

Now it’s pretty complicated to mix the ingredients together.

Kidding!

Just measure everything into a jar.

Shaking the jar to mix the ingredients together.

Put the lid on, and give it a good shake!

You’ll want to shake the jar well just before making the dip to ensure that no ingredients have settled to the bottom.

Otherwise you might get a very garlicky or salty dip.

You could also measure out all of the ingredients in a small bowl, mix well, then transfer to an airtight container. But I don’t see the need!

Add a label to the onion dip mix to show how much to use when making the dip.

Add a label to the jar with instructions on how to make the onion dip.

You can store it in an airtight container at room temperature, or freeze it for even longer-term storage!

Now you’ve got your own homemade French onion dip mix!

Mixing the Dip:

Add the onion dip mix to sour cream in a glass storage container.

When it’s time to make the dip, give the jar a really good shake and measure out 5 teaspoons of the dip mix per 1 cup of sour cream.

If you have an 8 ounce container of sour cream, use 5 teaspoons of the dry mix. And use 10 teaspoons (or 3 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon) of the mix for a 16 ounce tub of sour cream.

Folding the onion dip mix into the sour cream with a spatula.

Give everything a really good stir. You want everything to be WELL mixed.

Placing the lid on the storage container.

Cover well and place in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.

This gives the dried ingredients time to rehydrate and the flavors to meld.

Here’s what the dip looks like after about 24 hours in the refrigerator.

The finished onion dip in a glass storage container with the lid, jar of the onion dip mix, and a few potato chips on the counter beside it.

It’s so good with plain old potato chips, Pita chips, or Frito-style corn chip dippers (that was my dad’s favorite combo growing up).

You could also add some chopped fresh chives or green onions just before serving, but it’s not necessary.

Here’s another close-up look at the texture!

If you have any leftover dip, it will stay fresh in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days if stored properly. If you get a bunch of chip crumbs in the dip, or if your container isn’t perfectly airtight, it won’t last as long. Use your eyes and nose!

Can You Use Greek Yogurt?

Adding the onion dip mix to the Greek yogurt.

I decided to test out making the dip with plain Greek yogurt in case y’all are looking to add a bit of extra protein!

I made one onion dip with half sour cream, half Greek yogurt, and the other dip with all Greek yogurt.

A side by side comparison of the dip made with half Greek yogurt, and the dip made with all Greek yogurt.

Here’s what the dips looked like after chilling in the refrigerator for about a day.

My kids and I agreed that we preferred the dip made with just half Greek yogurt. The all Greek yogurt isn’t bad, it just strays a bit too far from the classic French onion dip in my opinion.

A hand holding a chip with the all Greek yogurt dip on it.

As you can see, the Greek yogurt wants to split a bit. And the texture just isn’t as creamy of course. It would be lovely as a vegetable dip, though!

I’d also like to experiment by using part cream cheese for an even creamier dip. That’s the wonderful thing about the homemade version of store bought items: they’re customizable!
