One of the coolest baking tips ever… Tried and true… If you need to soften butter quickly but don’t want to melt it…. Put boiling hot water in a glass to heat the glass. Dump the water out and flip it over your stick of butter. In a few minutes it will be softy soft to use! You’re welcome!
Let’s give it a go:
First of all, I pour just-boiled water into a glass and then dumped it back out.
Then, I flipped the glass over a stick of fresh-from-the-fridge butter and let it sit for 5 minutes.
This is what the butter looked like after 5 minutes under the cup.
It definitely softened butter a bit, but not super dramatically. I think it would have been soft enough to make cookies, for example.
I poured more hot (not boiling) water in the glass and repeated the process for another 5 minutes. The extra time didn’t soften the butter much more.
THE VERDICT: DOES IT WORK?
Yes and no.
It DID work to soften the butter slightly, but it wasn’t all softy soft. Also, this isn’t a SUPER fast way of softening butter. It’s definitely quicker than just leaving it at room temperature to soften, but first you need to boil the water, and then you need to let the cup sit over the butter for 5-10 minutes, for a total time of around 10-15 minutes.
Again, it works faster than just putting your butter on your counter, but it isn’t mind-blowingly amazing.
So this one gets a sort-of-works.

You may want to caution your readers against pouring boiling water into a glass, as it can cause it to crack or shatter. #thermalshock Looking forward to more hacking of hacks!
